TIP OF THE WEEK: Drying Mama Cloth in small spaces (CLOTH DRYING STRAPS & SPECIAL OFFER)

Hey Mama's! I hope everyone is having a wonderful week! If you are in Ontario like I am you are likely soaking up some sun and mild temperatures! You may even be drying your Cloth Diapers & Mama Cloth outdoors :)

This week I was excited to introduce another new product to my Mama Cloth Boutique! Cloth Pad Drying Straps!  This has been long overdue. I am so excited to finally be offering this simple and easy to use product.

These handy straps currently come in 3 colour/print options: Leopard-Pink Snaps, Leopard-Lavender Snaps, Chevron- Green Snaps. I have plans to make them in a few more fun prints this spring as well (or sooner if they sell quickly). Like cloth pads and cloth diapers I think it's expected we keep things fun and "pretty" isn't it???

Cloth pad drying straps are a great option for people with limited space. Even if you have a large laundry room it's nice to keep your pads all together in a simple way. Drying racks can be a pain to set up and take up a large amount of space. I personally dislike using my drying rack. We have the space in our new home but it's extremely bulky and I dislike adding a million clothes pegs just to dry my pads. To use these handy little straps all you have to do is snap a bunch of pads together at the wings and snap one end of the outer pads on the strap. You then take your row of pads and find a spot to hang it. I often hang mine on my shower curtain rod in the bathroom or outside on my deck in the summer. Try and find somewhere with good air flow so that the inserts of your pad dry quickly.  If you have limited air flow in a room where you want to dry your pads I often set up a small fan just to speed up the process. If the air is still it is very difficult for the insert layer to dry. Many of the inserts in my pads are made from Organic Hemp Cotton Fleece which is SUPER absorbent (about 3-4x more absorbent than cotton) but it also takes a bit longer to dry than a cotton insert.  I personally tumble dry all my pads, but I still find the inserts can be a bit damp when I take them out of the dryer. When that happens I take the pads out of the dryer and hang them for an hour or two just to make sure all dampness is out of them before storing them away until Aunt Flo returns again. It's important to store pads completely dry to avoid damage to your pads or mold build up. Never store pads that are damp!

Cloth Pad Drying Straps are only $4.00 CDN each and for this week (until February 5th 2016) they ship within Canada FREE. Get yours today and take advantage of this introductory special! GO HERE!

TIP OF THE WEEK: My Make Up Removal Routine #DitchTheDisposables

I am always looking for new ways to ditch disposable products and reduce waste. Reusable products are not only better for your pocket and the environment but also for your health! Many disposable products are made with harmful ingredients. I ditched my disposable make up remover pads years ago and I don't miss it one bit!

Reusable cosmetic pads are one of my favorite products at my Mama Cloth Boutique . I use mine everyday for make up removal, toner, and my daughter uses them in the bath for washing her face.  A few friends of mine have mentioned that they love them for travel use as well because they can be used to wash/clean your face but also remove make up, you can wash them in a hotel room and never run out while you are on holidays! The best part is about these puppies is that they are machine washable!  Very rarely do I use more than one at a time to take the make up off my face.  Cosmetic Pads are sold in packs of 5 and measure at approximately 4" each. They are made from Organic Bamboo Velour (the super soft side I use to remove most of my make up), filled with absorbent Cotton Fleece, and backed with a cute flannel printed fabric.

MY MAKE UP REMOVAL ROUTINE:

I store my cosmetic pads in a 4" round ceramic container from IKEA.
One cosmetic pad usually does the job to remove all of my 'everyday make up'.  Sometimes I have to use 2 if I am rocking more of an 'evening rockstar/lady of the night' look. ;)
For make up remover I prefer Body Shop's Chamomile make up remover but after recently reviewing the EWG.org Cosmetic Data base I may be switching back to my own home made solution. After doing my research this product isn't as toxic free as I had hoped. I don't always buy make up remover.  Often I use something out of the kitchen like coconut oil and throw it in a small jam jar for my bathroom.  I know some people use Olive Oil or Almond Oil as well.  There are a lot of options that you can use that come right from your kitchen! Before making your selection READ THE LABEL!!! EWG.org Cosmetics Data base is a great resource! If you haven't used that website in the past I suggest you check it out. They also have an app (which I have yet to try). It's a great way to get a rating on any beauty products you are buying Make your selection wisely.

Apply some make up remover of your choice to the cosmetic pad and gently wipe away dirt/make up. I find that one cosmetic pad is more than enough for the amount of make up that I wear.  The 4" round pads are the perfect size for both eyes and my eye brow pencil removal.
 #NoMakeUpSelfie right here ;)

Now just rinse the cosmetic pad in water! I never have to apply stain remover to my cosmetic pads because I always rinse them upon using them.
Be sure to squeeze the pad out a few times to remove anything that was absorbed to the core of the pad.
Toss in the wet bag with your cloth wipes, diapers, mama cloth or towels!

TIP OF THE WEEK: Don't get your panties in a twist! ;)

Hello Ladies!

I hope everyone is having a fabulous week!!!

Last week we discussed Cloth Pad shifting and touched a bit on cloth pad bunching. These issues can arise if your cloth pads aren't fitting the underwear that you have selected. For this weeks blog post I wanted to introduce a new product to Mama Cloth Boutique that will help with anyone experiencing cloth pad BUNCHING. Welcome CLOTH PAD WING EXTENDERS!

Do you find your pads are bunching? If your underwear gusset is a wider (like a boy short style) or if you are plus sized and have a wider underwear gusset this can happen with cloth pads.  Unlike disposable pads cloth pads don't stick to your underwear to stay in place so it's important to make sure they fit correctly to avoid shifting/bunching which could cause leaks. Since we are all different shapes & sizes it is possible that your cloth pad could be too tight around the gusset of your panties causing a bit of bunching.  I personally prefer a snug fit & a bit of bunching doesn't bother me at all.  I would rather it too tight than too loose (which causes shifting of the pad on your undies and could potentially cause a leak). For those that are experiencing too much bunching causing discomfort, I have introduced a new product to fix the problem. Read on...

Wing Extenders are made from 1/2" wide braided elastic & kam snaps. The snaps are available in a wide variety of colours (Black, White, Bright Pink, Light Pink, Light Blue, Bright Green & Lavender). Gotta make it fun right??? ;)

Cloth Pad Wing Extenders add approximately 1" to the width of your pad! Don't get your undies in a twist! Just snap the extender on and you are ready to go! If you need even MORE of an extension you could snap 2 together adding a 2" increase to your pad (but I doubt this is necessary). A cheap solution at only $2.00 per extender!

CARE/WASHING:  To increase the longevity of your Cloth Pad Wing Extenders, avoid machine washing them. Please be sure to remove your extenders before tossing your cloth pads in the washer. Because they are positioned under the pad, it is unlikely that they will become soiled. If you do need to wash your Extenders, we suggest hand-washing them and air drying OR using a Cloth Pad Drying Strap! Drying snaps are coming soon to Mama Cloth Boutique!

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave a message below.  :) Don't forget to follow me on my socials!

TIP OF THE WEEK: Cloth Routine & Accessories for Cloth Pads on the go!

Mama Cloth is just as simple on the go as it is at home. I know some people are turned off by the idea of dealing with cloth pads on the go but it really isn't that difficult as long as you have a few handy accessories to make your life easier.

The key is the accessories! Travel Wet Bags & Pad Wrappers make traveling with cloth pads so much easier!

Travel Wet Bags are for sale at my Mama Cloth Web Boutique.  Each travel wet bag has 2 pockets. 1 pocket is zipped (normally that's where I store soiled pads so they are sealed away securely) and one pocket has a snap closure for clean pads ready for use. Travel wet bags are approximately 9 1/2" x 7 1/2" and hold several pads (depending on the size of the pad your carrying). Wet bags are made from PUL fabric which is a waterproof breathable fabric (used to make cloth diapers).  They keep wet/soiled items contained on the go. Each wet bag also has an elastic loop which you can use to hang on bathroom doors so they are up off the ground while you do your thing. The best part is they are machine washable & eco friendly!

Wet bags have many uses around our home. Not just for pads! Soiled hankies, wet swimsuits, soiled baby clothes, kitchen rags/ dish cloths, cloth diapers, cloth nursing pads, cloth wipes & more. They are a great addition to an environmentally conscious home. Wet bags are also available in MEDIUM SIZE at my web boutique (great for household use) and custom orders are also available in larger sizes for your nursery or laundry room.

Pad Wrappers are a MUST for my "On The Go" routine. Pad wrappers are for sale at my web store $3.50ea  or 3 for $10.

It doesn't matter what time of the month it is I am ALWAYS carrying at least 1 wrapper stuffed with a clean pad. You never know right?? I don't often carry a wet bag if I am not expecting my period, but rarely do I ever leave home without a clean pad stuffed in a pad wrapper!

Like wet bags Pad Wrappers are made from the same PUL fabric protecting your soiled pad from anything else it may come in contact with.

Pad wrappers have many uses around our home.  My husband and I have devoted a few for items such as ear buds (otherwise they would be a tangled mess in the bottom of my purse), bandaids (again..lost in the purse of Narnia without these wrappers), and my daughter uses them to hold reusable hankies in her backpack.  Pad Wrappers come in many different colours/prints. I have a chevron wrapper for my pads, a lime green wrapper for my ear buds, and a purple one for bandaids.

Okay, so we have gone over the accessories. Now what about a public bathroom routine?  I don't feel comfortable rinsing my cloth pads in a public sink.  No judgements here if that's what you do. What I do is use the reusable wrapper and deal with it once I am at home.  I remove the fresh pad from the wrapper for use. The soiled pad then goes in my pad wrapper.  To keep things even more contained and sealed I put the wrapper in my travel wet bag. This step isn't necessary but it just makes me feel better considering my 4 year old often enjoys rummaging thru my purse. Once I am at home, I deal with the usual treatment and stain removal of my pads. Voila! Not as hard as it sounds right? No rinsing in public. It's like it never even happened ;)

For more info about these products please check out my web store or feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how to care for your pads & cloth accessories.

All washing instructions are available HERE on my website. I also have a FAQ page worth checking out. You Tube has a LOT to offer in terms of washing routines and care suggestions. I plan on posting some videos of my own this year so keep watch for those! I have tried a few washing methods. Some people soak them until they are ready for the washer. I usually rinse and stain remove them immediately and just leave them in the wet bag until laundry day. Using cloth products isn't as difficult as it sounds. The important part is to find a routine that works for you. Some people make more work for themselves then needed. Do your research and find something that works for you. Please feel free to contact me at any time for suggestions.

Have a good week!

TIP OF THE WEEK: Cloth Pad Shifting & Bunching???

 Hello & Happy New Year!!!

Part of my New Years Resolution for my business is to Blog more, Sew More, & Post More!!!

One of my goals is to post weekly tips that have to do with Greener Living and Cloth! So watch for that!

This weeks topic is... PAD SHIFTING!!! Say whaaaat???

You heard me. Pad shifting! Have you ever gotten weird shifting using cloth pads? Since cloth pads are snapped together vs. stuck to your undies like disposable pads, it is possible that cloth pads can shift/bunch around on your underwear.  For those of you experiencing these issues I have some tips for you...

1) Adjust your Snap Setting: Always check the snap setting of your cloth pads.  Proper fit is important.  If your pads are not snug around the gusset of your underwear they may shift.  It is important to select the pad setting that allows a snug fit for our cloth pad.

2) Blame Your Undies:  I personally have what I call my "Period Panties".  Usually a boy short or bikini style with a wider gusset.  If you are wearing slinky bikini underwear with a gusset (crotch of your panty) that isn't wide enough you may experience shifting.  I often select underwear that is snugly fit and has more coverage for 'That time of the month". You want the pad to be snug to the crotch of your underwear. The more secure the pad the less risk of leaks & movement!

3) Pad Extenders: For many plus sized women (or women that tend to purchase styles of underwear with a wider gusset) the issue can also be that pads are TOO tight to the gusset of your underwear. This may cause bunching. If this is the case PAD EXTENDERS (much like bra extenders) can be purchased.  If this applies to you please contact me and I can custom make some extenders for you at little cost.

Hope this post helps some of you! Please keep a watch for weekly tips on Healthy Living & Cloth Everything!!

All the best for 2016!

SHOP ANNOUNCEMENT: Changes for USA Customers

I regret to announce that effective immediately Mama Cloth Boutique will not be selling cloth pads to USA Customers. FDA regulations states that Cloth Pads are classified as "Medical Devices" and require FDA annual registration of $3700 (which will increase regularly).  As a small business (Work At Home Mom). I cannot absorb these fees at this time. I do hope these rules are temporary. Every cloth pad maker shipping to the States is affected, and there are many of us pushing for changes to be made. Please visit the links below & sign the petition!
Please note this is only effecting CLOTH MENSTRUAL PADS.  Accessories & other items such as Wet Bags, Wrappers, Nursing Pads, Baby Wipes, Teething Covers, Mug Cozy's will all be available for purchase to USA customers but we will not be able to ship Cloth Pads.  I am very sad to do this and I do apologize to all of my lovely U.S ladies. I am very grateful for all of your business but we just cannot absorb such a hefty annual fee! As a small WAHM shop we have no choice but to suspend the shipping of Cloth Menstrual Pads to USA customers at this time. All other items will ship to the United States, but not cloth pads.

Please be patient as I update my website to reflect this over the next few days. USA Customers may still order from us but if pads are purchased you will be refunded for those items & we will ship the balance of your order.
A HUGE thank you to my U.S. Customers & friends for all of your support the past 2 years! I thank you all for the support  and I do hope to see you return and order other reusable cloth items.

My take on all of this...A quick rant.
Pads should not be labelled as "MEDICAL DEVICES". This implies that menstruation is a medical problem or disease.  Natural function of our bodies is not a medical problem and Cloth Pads should not be labelled as such.  The FDA is not respecting a women's right to have a choice about which products they use to manage menstruation.  If they really cared they would be a bit more concerned with investigating the toxic ingredients in 'FDA Approved' disposable products and going after those companies. This is why I refuse to pay this ridiculous fee. Disposable pads are generally loaded with toxins (and FDA approved) which tells us they really don't care about your protection.
How are Cloth Pads any different from selling undergarment items? Cloth Diapers? Baby Wipes? Cosmetic Pads? I can't help but have a feeling that with the huge trend and increase of Reusable Products these past few years we must have all put a nice dent in brand name disposables stocks. This has to be affecting someones pocket hence why they are cracking down more than ever. These fees are smothering Canadian WAHM businesses who are forced to freeze shipping to the USA and putting USA makers out of business. Thanks FDA! Also thank you for not allowing my USA customers to make the choice about the products they use for menstruation and limiting there availability.

Please check out the links below & PLEASE, PLEASE sign the petition to lower/eliminate the registration fee for Pad Makers! This doesn't just effect the makers. This effects YOU! Your options will now be limited to those companies (generally large corporations) that can afford these fees & your selection to reusable cloth pads and menstrual cups will be more limited.

NOOBIES HERE! Selecting Cloth Pads. What do I need???

First, let me say thanks for considering Mama Cloth! Your wallet & your lady bits will thank you!!! :)

I cloth diapered my daughter, used cloth baby wipes, nursing pads, and now our family has made the switch to all kinds of reusable products including Kitchen Cloth, Cloth Cosmetic Pads, Hankies, Mama Cloth & more! The savings both financially and health wise has not gone unnoticed! I am so happy you are considering Cloth Pads for yourself or even just showing some interest by reading this post.
I am always here to help! If you have any questions please don't ever hesitate. I feel like I have heard it all at this point. My world is TMI. Period talk is part of my everyday. Cloth pads fill my house, my world. So please, don't be shy if you do contact me with a question. It's important we find the best cloth pad solution for you!

TIPS WHEN SELECTING YOUR PADS:

I would first suggest you start  off by looking at what you currently use in disposables. What length of pads do you most often use? Don't forget to consider things like Panty Liners and Thong Liners as an option for lighter days or when using a cup or Organic Cotton Tampon. Heavy flow pads are also available to those looking for more protection for Post Partum or Overnights.

Pay attention to your cycle, how long it lasts, and if there is a pattern to it (ie. light flow for a few days, heavy flow, then tapers off again??) Do you notice a pattern that may help you determine the type of pads you will use? Pay attention to the pads for one cycle if you are unsure. What lengths and styles do you use and how many? Some women use no panty liners at all yet others tend to have a cycle that tapers off at the end and require some light day pads or liners for protection during those final days. We are all so different so it's important to take a good look at your cycle to help determine this. Another option is to just try a few and build your stash slowly.  Many people choose this option if they find it's a bit expensive for them to purchase an entire stash at once.  This may require more washing but it is definitely do-able.

Another good thing to ask yourself is how often will you do laundry? Everyday? Every other day? Every third day???  If you are cloth diapering you can just throw your Mama Cloth in with your diapers. If you are diaper washing every day or every other day you may NOT need a big stash of Mama Cloth to start off with. However, it is always nice to have a few extras to keep in your purse or as a back up so keep that in mind.

Still unsure?? My web store carries a few assorted bundle packs if you would like to sample a few of the styles before investing in a stash custom to you (see the image below). Choosing an assorted bundle is a great way to try out a few different pads, fabrics or lengths before deciding on a favorite. This is a great option if you are unsure or tend to be a bit indecisive (like myself) ;). Pad bundles available are shown below and can be purchased at our web store.

TYPES OF MAMA CLOTH PADS...

1) PANTY LINERS:
Panty Liners are approximately 7.25"-7.5" in length.  They have an adjustable snap with 2 fit options.  Best of all they come in a few different fabric options & price points.

COTTON FLANNEL PANT LINERS:
Made with 3 Layer soft flannel fabric.  Comes in an assortment of fun prints & colours! Great for light spotting, bladder leakage or pregnancy. This is our thinnest panty liner.

 ORGANIC BAMBOO VELOUR PANTY LINERS:
Made with 3 Layers of soft Organic Bamboo Velour.  This fabric is as soft as butter on the skin & washes beautifully!  All dyes are Eco-Friendly.  These liners are a great option for those with sensitive skin!  These panty liners are slightly thicker than our Flannel Liners offering a bit more protection for heavier spotting & bladder leakage.

These panty liners offer the protection of a  pad but with the thin panty liner shape/length.  A great option for Petite Women or Teens to use for light flow because they offer the most protection of all our panty liners.  The Organic Bamboo Velour fabric is what is touching the skin, very soft & a great option for those prone to skin irritations.  The absorbency layer is Hemp Cotton Fleece which has antibacterial properties and offers about 3x more absorbency than regular cotton.  The PUL fabric is the layer protecting your underwear. This is a commonly used fabric for cloth diapers. It is waterproof and breathable!

2) THONG LINERS:
Thong liners are approximately 6.5" length and come in two fabric options. Great for light days or those using a Menstrual Cup.

FLANNEL THONG PANTY LINERS:
Made from 3 Layers of Cotton Flannel.  Single Snap closure. Comparable in size/shape to disposable thong liners.

ORGANIC BAMBOO VELOUR  PUL BACKED THONG PANTY LINERS:
Made from 1 Layer OBV (Organic Bamboo Velour) & 1 Layer PUL Fabric. These Thong Liners offer a thin but leak proof protection.  The OBV Fabric is the fabric touching the skin and like ALL of our OBV it is dyed with Eco Friendly Dyes.  The PUL Fabric offers a leak protection layer to protect your undergarments.

3) AIO Pads (All-In-One Pad)
All-In-One or A.I.O pads mean the pad has an insert sewn IN to place and does NOT need to be folded, stuffed, or removed for washing. A.I.O Pads are the closest thing you will get to using a disposable (but much healthier and much more comfortable). You just rinse it, use a stain stick if necessary, then toss it in your wet bag or pail for the wash. Our A.I.O pads currently come in two fabric options and two lengths (so 4 pads to choose from shown below).

9" COTTON FLANNEL/HEMP A.I.O PAD:
Made from 2 outer layers of soft Cotton Flannel & 2 absorbency layers of Organic Hemp Cotton Fleece. The outter shell of the pad is a Cotton Flannel Print. The absorbency layer (insert) is a double layer Organic Hemp Fleece which offers anti-bacterial properties & is over 3-4x more absorbent than Cotton Fleece. These pads are great for Regular-Heavier Flow and come in a variety of fun prints/colours. The cotton and hemp is not overly bulky and extremely breathable making this a great day pad or summer pad. Like all of our pads (except Thong Lines), these pads offer a double adjustable snap.

12" COTTON FLANNEL/HEMP A.I.O PAD:
With the same features as the 9" Flannel pad above these pads offer slightly more protection in length. A great option for those looking for a bit more underwear coverage.

9" OBV/HEMP/PUL A.I.O PAD:
This pad is the same shape/pattern as our 9" Flannel/Hemp pad but using Organic & PUL Fabrics.  The outside layer touching the skin is a soft Organic Bamboo Velour dyed with Eco-Friendly dyes. The absorbency layer (insert) is a double layer Organic Hemp Fleece which offers anti-bacterial properties & is over 3-4x more absorbent than Cotton Fleece.  The side touching your underwear is made from PUL fabric used often on Cloth Diapers to offer a leak proof layer. These pads are a fantastic option for women looking for a less bulky pad with Moderate-Heavy flow. The Organic Bamboo Velour is always a fantastic option for those with sensitive skin & the PUL backing is a great option for those worried about leak protection!

12" OBV/HEMP/PUL A.I.O PAD:
This pad is the same shape/pattern as our 12" Flannel/Hemp pad but using Organic & PUL Fabrics.

4) Pocket Pads:
Pocket pads are similar to pocket diapers. You fold & stuff them yourself. We offer Pocket Pads in two lengths (9" Here or 11" Here). These pads are only made in Cotton Flannel with Cotton Fleece Inserts (one insert is included with the purchase of each Pocket Pad). Custom orders in Organic Fabrics or with PUL backing are also an option. Please contact me if you are interested in a Custom Order (minimums may apply).
Additional Cotton Fleece inserts can be purchased on our web store as well as Organic Hemp Cotton inserts. I often suggest Pocket Pads to women for Postpartum use, Heavy Days and Overnights. These pads are bulkier than my A.I.O style pads (especially if you double up on inserts). I personally only use these pads for overnights or heavy days but some of my customers swear by them.  They are kind of like a hybrid pad as well because you can stuff the insert inside the pad like a cloth diaper, or use the elastic option on the top of the pad to add an extra insert (or even two). I have known some women to just use the shell instead of purchasing panty liners as well. This is a neat option for those on a budget.

For PP use you can also make "PADSICLES"  to soothe the 'Ouch!' post baby while still offering leak protection.  Check out this video I found on You Tube for an easy DIY PP Pad Project. This video shows a recipe for Disposable Pads but you may do the same with our Pocket Pads or AIO pads. In fact, if you are using Pocket Pads you could just freeze the INSERT portion of the pad and adding it to the flannel shell when ready to use.

We also have a few accessories available that makes traveling and storing Mama Cloth much easier and more discreet.
Wet Bags & Reusable Pad Wrappers are also available on my website and are a great way to keep soiled Mama Cloth, Cosmetic Pads, Cloth Diapers contained until ready for washing.  All Wet Bags & Pad wrappers are made from Waterproof Breathable PUL Fabric & can be machine washed.

All Mama Cloth products are machine washable and fabrics are hand selected and hand sewn by myself :)

I hope that this post has helped you. If you have any questions or are still unsure about what you need to get started please feel free to CONTACT me or leave a comment below :)
